Speaking of fiber optic cable, we should first thanks to Bell Laboratories, Corning U.S.A and Charles K. Kao.They contribute a lot to the fiber optic industry to bring the convenience to people from all over the world. In 1977, the first fiber optic communication system was put to commercial use in Chicago, U.S.A, with a transmission speed at 45Mbps.After that, fiber optic cable communication developed rapidly, and fiber optic systems have been updating to new generation for many times. At the early 1970s, multimode fiber optic cable dominates the market with typical 850nm (nm is the measurement unit, 1 meter is equal to 1000000000nm) working wavelenth. In the 1980s l310nm wavelength single mode fiber optic cable are more and more used to enable a long distance data transmission. In the early 1990s, the fiber optic transmission bandwidth enlarged to 50 times as before and unto 2.5Gbps, 1310nm was gradually replaced by 1550nm, new technologies such as WDM, Optical Fiber Ampler were introduced to be used in fiber optic cable systems, which caused fiber optic capacity and working distance continue to increase than before.

Typical optical fiber types are G652, G653, G654, G655 and G657.G652 is most commonly and widely used time currently, G653 is designed to work with 1550nm, at this wavelength it has a best performance. G654 is usually used in under sea fiber optic cables, G655 is typically used in WDM system and G657 is a new type, it aim to build a bend-insensitive cable that is flexible and not easy to be broken by bending, so that it will fit for the FTTH applications.

Indoor fiber optic cables typical are round or ribbon type, fiber optic patch cables and fiber optic jumpers, fiber optic pigtails are usually made by indoor fiber optic cables, using simplex or duplex or multi fiber optic cables, with commonly used SC, ST, FC, LC, MU, MT-RJ, MPO, MTP, E2000, DIN, D4, FDDI, ESCON, etc connectors, to make the assemblies to link the various fiber optic equipment. Single mode indoor fiber optic cable is yellow color, multimode is orange color. Recently people also developed the armored indoor fiber optic cables, which are waterproof, and anti-rodent.10G indoor fiber optic cables are used in multimode fiber optic networks with bandwidth unto 10G.
