Fiber Optic Wire
Fiber optic wire, or we say fiber optic cable, is the key component in the fiber optic communication systems. Fiber optic communication use optical fiber as the medium to transmit and receive the signal, but the fiber itself is too tender and they must be put into the protection tube to form the wires to use. We are going to talk about the basic structure of the fiber optic wire, the general classifications of them and related standards.

Basic model of the fiber optic wire include four parts. Its core is the optical fiber, which is the  part responsible for data communication. The first layer protection around the optical fiber is a plastic buffer tube; usually we simply call it buffer. To further protect the optical fiber from bent and tension, the strength member is used; this strength member can be various kinds of materials, like Kevlar or metal wire. The forth part is the jacket; it surrounds all the parts we talked above and form the fiber optic wire.

Actually the model we talked above is only the basic cable structure; in practice there are too many kinds of fiber optic wires. Generally there are classified by indoor and outdoor types depend on their applications. Indoors type are usually smaller diameter and PVC jacket, outdoor much bigger diameter and with black color PE jacket. Standards of the fiber optic wires are two types, one is the safety codes introduced by Article 770 of the National Electric Code, primarily these safety standards are for fiber optic wire applications aspect, the other is by EIA/TIA standards, mainly for the manufacturing and testing for the fiber optic wires.
