In most networks today, fiber optic play an important role and is used as backbones for long time transmissions. But today’s telecommunication networks is not a full fiber network, the transmission medium between the end user and the nearest central office or nearest remote terminal, today it is still a vast number of copper cables function at this segment. This last mile is the bottomneck of modern telecommunications network.
FTTx today(2008) is still not realized. Although many theories have been put out and proved feasible, to replace such huge number of copper cables and equipment all over the world take not only time but high cost, FTTx is still very slow development because it still is not cost effective enough, so will we use full fiber network in the future, probably yes but it certainly is not overnight work.
