As its name suggests, plastic optical fiber is made completely by plastic, this is quite different from silica optical fibers. Plastic optical fiber is now growing to compete with copper and multimode silica fiber in short distance applications.
POF was developed by Dupont in the 1960’s, at the early stage the plastic fiber was step index profile and was very limited application because of their apparent shortcomings: high attenuation (200dB/km) and low bandwidth (around 5MHz.km). Meanwhile plastic optical fiber do have their advantages like low cost, a large NA and easy in its applications. In the 1990’s, Japanese researchers developed a low loss plastic optical fiber which reduce the attenuation to 50dB/km and bandwidth to 300-500MHz.km, from then on, POF again draw the interest of the users for data transmissions, but till this time, plastic fiber has not occupied a lot of market compared with silica optical fibers.
