Synchronous Optical Network |
SONET, the Synchronous Optical Network is one of the first generation fiber optic network structure, yet it is a powerful transmission system. It has a European counter part, which is called SDH. SONET was developed as high-speed telephone network.
The physical makeup of SONET adopts optical fiber and electronic equipment such as various multiplexers, digital cross-connections and regenerators. SONET can use both ring and the point-to-point topologies. The SONET system usually contains the following layers: physical, section, line and patch layers.
