Single Mode Fiber Optic
A single mode fiber is also called SM fiber or SMF; it suggests this optical fiber is designed to support only one light transmission mode, that is, one beam propagating along the optic fiber core. As we know, the fiber optic cables are generally classified by single mode and multimode. But actually over 80 percent of the world fibers are single mode types. Long distance fiber optic transmission must use SM fiber, but nowadays, more and more single mode fiber cables are used in short distance connections too.

Typical single mode fiber in the market is the 9/125 micron type. Usually on the cable jacket you will find the specifications. Indoors single mode fiber cables use yellow color to identify them, this is the industrial practice. SM fiber cables are relatively cheaper than multimode types (if they are same length same fiber strand). Sometimes you may see the term “monomode fiber”, it is same meaning to sm fiber.
